Blackhorse Lane Walthamstow, London

Blackhorse Lane Walthamstow, London

Gort Scott worked as a part of a multidisciplinary team on this urban design framework to underpin the London Borough of Waltham Forest’s Area Action Plan for Blackhorse Lane.

2009–2010
Client: London Borough of Waltham Forest
Project Status: Completed

Located immediately adjacent to the Lea Valley, the area will be transformed over the next decade with the development of a number of key sites, to deliver more than 2000 new homes and improve local amenity and infrastructure by providing a new waterfront park, Neighbourhood Centre and secondary school.

The project involved careful consideration of the nature and qualities of ex-industrial land in London, to ensure that new and existing business and industrial uses could also be accommodated alongside the requirement for new housing. One of our unique contributions to the framework was in devising a methodology for the documentation of all the existing business in the study area, and in-depth analysis of existing buildings and their potential future roles.

This commission provides the evidence base for an Area Action Plan (AAP) for Blackhorse Lane, a formal Development Plan Document which will provide the statutory basis for Council action to achieve regeneration, and not just redevelopment, of this important area.
