The project draws on the rich history of the street, the first market street to be lit by electricity and renowned as one of London’s vibrant local street markets. Inspired by this rich history, Gort Scott delivered a project that restored a sense of the excitement of Electric Avenue’s heyday, whilst supporting the market to thrive.

Access to, and the operation of, the market on Electric Avenue has been improved, with stall locations rearranged to create a well balanced street. Extensive consultation and engagement with traders, shops, residents and the public ensured that design aspirations were balanced with the practical necessities.

It is a testament to the success of the project that cultural icon Eddy Grant was a guest of honour at a switching-on ceremony for the Electric Avenue sign. The event for locals and market traders was hosted by Lambeth Council and attended by Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan.
