Central Parade Residential Walthamstow, London

Central Parade Residential Walthamstow, London

New mixed-use scheme adjacent to Grade II listed Central Parade, creating new mews courtyard to activate previously dead spaces and connect existing and proposed commercial spaces.

2019
Client: London Borough of Waltham Forest
Project Status: Planning consented

Following the success of award-winning renovation of Central Parade into a creative and commercial hub, Gort Scott are working with the London Borough of Waltham Forest to deliver this next phase in their ambitious town centre regeneration strategy.

This next phase seeks to activate the backlands site to the rear of the existing Central Parade. The new scheme will provide 19 new mixed-tenure dwellings with ground floor commercial space around a mews courtyard, with two additional dwellings in the original Central Parade building.

The Festival of Britain style of the existing Central Parade building is embraced and enhanced through form, detailing and a material palette of red-brown brick, pigmented concrete and metal that references the existing building. Inset balconies and railing details echo the existing Central Parade building. Repetitive arched forms to the top floor create a wave that invokes the distinctive canopy and clock tower of the existing building.

Thinking outside the red line, our design activates the spaces in-between the architecture, framing a new 'mews' courtyard between the new and existing Central Parade buildings. This mews space will add to the network of vibrant high street sites in LB Waltham Forest’s regeneration strategy that includes the High Street, markets, the listed EMD cinema and the creative community at Hatherley Mews.
