Forest Road Walthamstow, London

Forest Road Walthamstow, London

A new, high-quality 90 no. residential block for first-time buyers in Walthamstow.

Client: Pocket Living
Project Status: Planning consented

Following the success of our first Pocket Living scheme Gainsford Road, Gort Scott was reappointed by Pocket Living to design a 90 no. 1-bed residential scheme for a newly acquired site at Forest Road, Walthamstow.

The scheme negotiates different contexts by sensitively integrating three and four storeys of compact, modern homes into the predominantly Victorian terrace-lined streets surrounding the site. Along the arterial Forest Road, a five storey massing is presented with a large, high-quality entrance and colonnade at ground floor that aids positive street activation. Precast curved concrete elements respond to the William Morris Gallery opposite and help to articulate the massing. A large façade graphic designed by a local artist responds to the area's Arts and Crafts heritage.

High-quality considered public realm is key for this scheme to ensure successful integration and to ensure the development is safe and enjoyable for all residents. The scheme will provide 100% affordable housing, four apartments of which are wheelchair adaptable, with communal external landscaping.
