New College Oxford Oxford, UK

A campus masterplan and the design of a significant new student accommodation block for New College, Oxford.

Client: New College, University of Oxford
Project Status: Competition: final shortlist
Budget: £25million

Gort Scott was invited by New College, Oxford to submit a scheme to masterplan for one of their campuses, and to design a significant new student accommodation block. The project was one of five invited entries in a design competition including David Kohn Architects, Alison Brooks Architects and Kengo Kuma.

The project represented an important opportunity to create a new quadrangle, to consolidate the majority of the College's accommodation needs in this City Centre site. The new stone buildings complete and link the existing Arts and Crafts buildings on the site, into a coherent ensemble that provides a calm and timeless backdrop for college and school life. The iridescent, scalloped top storeys reference the existing shifting rooflines of the college buildings, reflecting the established trees of the quad and the sky. This carefully modulated building is a confident, contemporary addition to the architectural heritage of New College.
