Wood Street Market Walthamstow, London

Wood Street Market Walthamstow, London

Funded by the Mayor’s Outer London Fund for high street regeneration, Gort Scott worked as part of a team led by East Architects to generate the overall design and strategy for a suite of projects along the high street at Wood Street in Waltham Forest.

2011–2012
Client: London Borough of Waltham Forest
Project Status: Completed

The overall strategy includes new lighting, signage, public art works, tree planting, shop-front and streetscape improvements.  One of these projects, the regeneration of Wood Street Indoor Market, initiated and managed by Gort Scott, was seen by Design for London as one of the major success stories of the Outer London Fund, Round One.

The market was seen as offering huge potential to the high street, but after suffering years of decline had become intimidating, cluttered and uninviting. In response we coordinated modest interior refurbishments and designed a new façade and signage.

Gort Scott also devised a competition in conjunction with the Council and market owners to invite a diverse range of new tenants to apply for an initially rent-free space in the market After a coordinated marketing campaign over 160 applications were received and 21 winners were selected, including a new bakery, florist, film shop, vintage sellers, cafe, community sewing hub, galleries and craft shops
